We decided to take Kristi's car so I could leave my car with the carseats, and it's too difficult to drive Jeff's truck into the city, so it all worked out. While we were driving down 66 Jeff was unable to swerve and hit a piece of wood with the front tire. At the time it didn't seem like a big deal, but several minutes later, the "check tire pressure" light came on. We decided to jump off 66 and hit up a gas station prior to getting on the metro or just driving into the city, because we certainly didn't want to deal with a tire issue in the dark!
Once we pulled into the gas station we knew something was wrong. The tire was definitely loosing air. Jeff decided to try to put some air in the tire, (it cost $1.00 for air! Is it just me, or is that craaaaazy?!) Ok, so as fast as it was going it, you could hear it pouring out. Yeah…great! Jeff was honestly so calm throughout the whole ordeal. I couldn't stop chuckling because before we left he wouldn't stop talking about how he just wanted to wear shorts, and he'll be so hot walking around DC. Well, little did he know he'd be in dress clothes on the ground fixing a car! Talk about hot! Ok, next step was to put on her spare tire, which also needed air, but the gas station guy was so nice and remote started the air compressor for us when I went back in to get more change. It took Jeff a good while to change the tire, only because of the type of jack that Kristi's car had. I guess it's called a screw jack, and the only thing that means to me is that I would NEVER have been able to change that tire by myself, it was SO hard for him to crank that thing, I couldn't imagine what I would have looked like!
Jeff took his dress shirt off and went to work!
Ok, so I ask a random guy if he knows of any close by auto repair places, preferably focusing on tires. He told us of a place, and how to get there (which was good, but I still used Siri!) and was so friendly and helpful. I don't think Jeff thought he was helpful, I think he thought he was annoying, because he didn't offer to help, but he offered a lot of advice! ha! Once the spare tire is on, and Jeff has hands that look like he worked on a car all day…oh wait…and his pants were all dirty, we found the repair shop at about 4:45. The shop was going to close at 5. Yikes! Initially they told us they didn't think they could help us, because the rim was bent, and they didn't sell rims. Then he took another look, and they were able to pound the rim down and ensure the tire was not leaking air. It wasn't just a temporary fix, it is totally fixed (according to the guy) and he said it's because she had steel rims. I don't really care what kind of rims they were, I was just SO darn happy the guy was able to help us. Next best part…we ask what we owe, and he says nothing! Come on! We gave him a generous "tip" and tried the best we knew how to share our appreciation for his work.
Finally, we drove to the metro station to get into the city, because 66 looked like a parking lot. We didn't get into the city and off the metro until a bit after 6. The show was set to start at 7:30. We basically stopped at the first restaurant we saw, which disappointed us a little, because we were both looking forward to slowly eating a good meal. It was a wood fire pizza place, so we got a salad and pizza. Talk about carb overload. Yuck! But at that point, our options were limited, so we just dealt with it.
The show was ah-mazing! I'm so glad we went. It sure is remarkable when you think about everything that goes into a production like that. Such talent and such hard work. It was a real treat for me to experience the show and the Kennedy Center in general. I look forward to taking the girls to a show when they're a bit older.
So happy that we finally made it to the show!
We made it safely back to Winchester, and still owe Kristi a rim or tires, if something goes wrong! :)
Hope your night was less eventful than ours!
